Sulphate is produced in the body by oxidation of the dietary proteins, methionine or cysteine (both sulphur containing amino acids), which probably provides ~ 80% of the sulphate required in man. Sulphur is the sixth most abundant mineral in breast milk (colostrum has three times more than mature milk) and the third most abundant mineral determined by percentage of total body weight in an adult. Compounds containing sulphur are found in all body cells and are indispensable for life. The primary sulphur-containing compounds of interest in humans include (but not limited to): methionine, cysteine, homocysteine, S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), taurine, glutathione (GSH), metallothionein, and inorganic sulphate. In addition, sulphur is needed for a number of chemical reactions involved in the metabolism of drugs, steroids, and xenobiotics.

Estimation of phenolic conjugation by colonic mucosa.
Conjugation of phenol by the colonic mucosa was assessed in vivo using dialysis tubing containing 1.5 ml of 1 mmol/l acetaminophen (paracetamol) and 10 mmol/l butyrate. These were allowed to equilibrate in the rectum for one hour. The glucuronidated and sulphated conjugates of acetaminophen were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography and bicarbonate concentrations by gas analysis. In 2...
متن کاملEfficacy of DMSA Therapy in a Sample of Arab Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
OBJECTIVE the aim of this study was to provide evidence that DMSA detoxification treatments cause a reduction of the heavy metal burden in the autistic, and that this reduction lessens neurological symptoms associated with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). METHOD The participants were 44 children, age 3 to 9 years of age, with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) according to Diagnostic and Stati...
متن کاملPorphyrinuria in Korean children with autism: correlation with oxidative stress.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder believed to be associated with heavy metal exposure, especially mercury (Hg), and is characterized by disturbances in metal elimination. Various studies correlated elevated heavy metal body burden with ASD diagnoses as evidenced by increased urinary porphyrin levels in patients. Urinary porphyrins were also determined in Korean pat...

SIR,-The role of altered colonic detoxification mechanisms in various pathophysiological conditions including ulcerative colitis and carcinogenesis cannot be overemphasised. 2 We have thus read with great interest the recent report of Ramakrishna et al about sulphation as a mechanism ofphenolic compound inactivation in human colonocytes (Gut 1991; 32: 46-9). Though the work provides valuable ne...
متن کاملRole of Metabolic Genes in Blood Arsenic Concentrations of Jamaican Children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder
Arsenic is a toxic metalloid with known adverse effects on human health. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) genes, including GSTT1, GSTP1, and GSTM1, play a major role in detoxification and metabolism of xenobiotics. We investigated the association between GST genotypes and whole blood arsenic concentrations (BASC) in Jamaican children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We used data ...
